A rescue disk is helpful when the malware infection is at such level that it is impossible to clean the computer using regular anti-malware applications. Most of them gives the option to boot from CD/DVD or USB stick.

Free Anti-virus Rescue Disks

Kaspersky Rescue Disk – is designed to scan and disinfect infected x86-compatible computers. It should be used when the infection is at such level that it is impossible to disinfect the computer using anti-virus applications or malware removal utilities (such as Kaspersky AVPTool) run under the operating system. In this case, a higher degree of efficiency of the disinfection is achieved since malware programs do not gain control when the operating system is being loaded. It can be booted from CD/DVD or any USB device.

BitDefender Rescue CD – a bootable anti virus scanner that scan your computer for malware. BitDefender Rescue Disk has ability to automatically update its virus definitions.

Dr.Web LiveCD – clean your computer of infected and suspicious files, help you copy important information to a removable data storage device or another computer, and then attempt to cure infected objects.

Dr.Web® LiveUSB – Dr.Web LiveUSB enables you to perform the emergency repair of an operating system using a USB flash drive.

AVG Rescue CD – a powerful must-have toolkit for the rescue and repair of infected machines. It can be booted from CD/DVD or USB stick.

Avira AntiVir Rescue System – a Linux-based application that allows accessing computers that cannot be booted anymore. Thus it is possible to repair a damaged system, rescue data and scan the system for virus infections. It can be booted from CD/DVD or USB stick.

F-Secure Rescue CD – scans the computer and renames all files containing malware to .virus file extension. Virus definition databases are updated automatically if the computer has an internet connection or can be updated manually by using a USB drive.

avast! BART CD – a bootable CD, giving you the capability to detect and remove virus infections on a computer. All this can be done fast and reliably, without the risk of spreading the infection any further.

Escan Rescue Disk – eScan Rescue Disk – You can scan and clean your hard disks with MWAV toolkit

OpenDiagnostics Live CD – The OpenDiagnostics Live CD (formerly know as the ClamAV Live CD). Very lightweight, the CD fluctuates between 300MB and 400MB and will fit on most writable media. This enables it to run on a very wide selection of computers. During the time it was used at the repair shop, computers with as little as 128 MB ram were successfully (read: took forever) scanned.

G Data BootCD – a Linux-based boot CD, with which the computer can be booted without using the installed operating system. Using the virus scanner contained on the CD, the system can be scanned in a state, in which any malware, which may be present on the hard disk, are not active and thus can be more easily discovered.

Panda SafeCD – useful for detecting and disinfecting malware infections which give regular AV products running within Windows a hard time. Automatic detection and removal of all types of malware. Boot from CD or USB stick. Supports using updated signature files.

PC Tools’ Alternate Operating System Scanner – a live CD that will detect, scan, and clean malware files and associated Windows registry keys from an infected Windows system. The Alternate Operating System Scan is designed to be a last resort, used to get Windows back into a state in which Spyware Doctor for Windows can do its job. Therefore, it only scans files and registry keys that are defined in the refdb database. It does not remove directories.

VBA32 Rescue– Direct Download – VBA Rescue runs on Linux LiveCD and uses VBA32 Console Scanner for Linux to scan and clean malware infested systems.

Norton Rescue Tools – The Norton Bootable Recovery Tool will help start your computer in a safe environment and then start cleaning up your infected system, returning your computer to health quickly. You will need your product key in order to use.
