"PC World’s in-house tests with the RTM version of Vista SP1 have shown mixed results. In file copying tests, the service pack proved noticeably faster than the original Vista OS. Other tests, on the other hand, showed little improvement (or actually performed worse than Vista without the service pack). For instance, our preliminary file compression tests showed a decrease in performance with SP1 installed.

"Known as APPLE-SA-2008-03-18 Security Update 2008-002, it contains more than 40 specific fixes for versions of Mac OS X. The most significant updates include Apache, ClamAV, Emacs, OpenSSH, PHP, and X11. To get the update, go to the Software Update pane in System Preferences, or Apple’s Software Downloads Web site. The update "is recommended for all users and improves the security of Mac OS X," according to the Apple Downloads page.

"Researchers at Georgia Tech have published a paper on BotSniffer—a program they’ve designed to detect and disable botnets. Botsniffer is not the only bot-detection program available, but the Georgia Tech research team believes that the program’s approach to the botnet issue results in a better correlation rate and a lower number of false positives.

"Anti-virus and anti-spyware technologies, which are packaged as ‘blacklist’ solutions, are gradually giving way to what security experts claim is a far more effective IT security technology based on ‘whitelist’ solutions. "First and foremost, least privilege models prevent 90 percent or more of today’s malware. You can’t ignore that statistic. Malware writers may easily code around least privilege when they need to, but it does significantly cut down on software that can cause harm today. Second, least privilege mechanisms make it harder for malware to modify key system components. While malware may be able to still do harm — much harm — with user-mode programming alone, not being able to semi-permanently modify the operating system does provide protection you would not have otherwise.

"TrueCrypt, an encryption program designed to hide your data from prying eyes, has released a new update that adds the ability to encrypt an entire disk. Seems like just about everyday we read about yet another exposure of sensitive data because someone’s laptop was stolen, but if those careless employees had used TrueCrypt it wouldn’t be a problem.
