How to effectively prevent Malware using SpywareBlaster Part 1
SpywareBlaster is a prevention software that protects against ActiveX based Malware installation. It also protects against known tracking cookies being installed in Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and adds thousands of known Malware installing sites to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.
SpywareBlaster works by preventing an ActiveX control from running in Internet Explorer by setting the kill bit so that the control is never called by Internet Explorer.
SpywareBlaster does not need to be running to provide protection. You can close it after enabling the desired protection settings. You may only need to run it occasionally to download the latest updates.
Download SpywareBlaster from the developer's page here Javacool Software
Double click the Spywareblaster setup file to start the installation.
Select the I accept the agreement radio button and click Next to proceed with the installation.
Select the location where you want to install SpywareBlaster. In the next screen specify whether you want a desktop shortcut to be installed as part of the installation and click Next. The SpywareBlaster setup will install the program files. Checkmark Run SpywareBlaster and click Finish. Once SpywareBlaster starts, you will be shown a three step tutorial on how to enable protection.
This is the main status/startup screen of the SpywareBlaster from where you can navigate to all the settings.
As with all security programs, the first step after completing the installation is to look for updates. Click Updates on the leftpane and then click on Check for Updates. Install any updates found and click on the Status button to return to the main screen.
In the main screen, Click on the link Enable all Protection to load the protection settings into your registry.
Now all of the protections offered by SpywareBlaster are enabled.
You can close SpywareBlaster now and be assured of being protected or you can read on to find out more about SpywareBlaster.
Internet Explorer Protection
Click the Internet Explorer tab.
There are two settings here that can be checked or unchecked. Prevent the Installation of ActiveX based spyware and Prevent ad/tracking cookies. Leave them checked, they are enabled by default.
Next is the Block List, the list of Malware ActiveX controls and Tracking cookies that are being blocked by SpywareBlaster. You can selectively disable protection for any item on the list by unchecking them. Rightclicking on the list window brings up couple of useful options.
You can use Find and Find next to search the Block List by name or CLSID (the string of numbers next to each name). More information on some of the items in the block list are available when you click More info on Items.
Permanent Ignore List
One of the options when you right click on the list window is the ignore list, where you can add an item or items to the ignore list or just view your current ignore list. This function is very useful when you want SpywareBlaster to ignore an item permanently, normally from the cookies list.
Even when you Enable All Protection, SpywareBlaster will check the ignore list and it will not enable protection for items on the Ignore List.
Ever wondered how SpywareBlaster blocks the ad/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer? It is by adding to the "Per Site Privacy Actions" list in the Privacy tab of Internet Options. Restricted Sites Protection
Click the Restricted sites tab.
This Block List contains known sites that are potentially unwanted, in the sense that they install Malware on the visitors systems. A right click on the list window provides the same options as explained above. The sites in this list are added to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer. I personally have this disabled in SpywareBlaster, because I use IE-SPYAD which is more comprehensive, adds more Malware sites to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer. Read more about IE-SPYAD here.
Mozilla / Firefox Protection
Click the Mozilla / Firefox tab.
There are no ActiveX controls to set killbits in Mozilla / Firefox as they are unsupported in those browsers. The Block List you find here is for blocking ad /tracking cookies being installed in your system when you browse the Web with Mozilla / Firefox. SpywareBlaster works by adding sites on this list to the Privacy > Cookies > Exceptions list in Mozilla / Firefox.
