Eight-Way Shootout Helps Find The Best Anti-Spyware Tool For You
ZDNet's anti-spyware roundup includes products from Computer Associates, Lavasoft, McAfee, Microsoft, PC Tools, Symantec, Trend Micro, and Webroot. After infecting a control machine with a bunch of spyware, they tested each of these vendor's products for their accuracy at detecting spyware, their speed in performing scans, their effectiveness at cleaning spyware, and for their ease of management.
The results surprised me. I found that some of my favorite applications, though still decent, don't perform quite as well as some newer, commercial applications. To spoil the article's ending: ZDNet found that if you care more about accuracy than speed, Symantec Client Security found the most spyware but scanned relatively slowly. If speed concerns you, Computer Associates eTrust Pest Patrol scanned faster than the other applications while still finding much of the spyware.
