Kiwibank hit by major phishing scam
Kiwibank took the unusual step today of providing details about an internet scam that targeted its customers and the steps it took to protect them -- as well as temporarily shutting down its own internet banking portal. Typically, banks are slow to go public with the details of internet fraud out of concern that publicity will undermine customer confidence.
But Kiwibank took less than 12 hours to go public with the details of the phishing scam that hit hundreds of its customers today and to reassure them of steps it had taken to boost their security. The bank said that around 4am today, "hundreds of people" -- including some Kiwibank customers -- had begun receiving emails requiring them to update their bank details.
