Yahoo throws in the search towel
The Internet became less interesting today as Yahoo showed signs that it has given up in its battle with Google for best search engine. The company, while not abandoning its search, isn't expecting to make great inroads with it, either. Google appears to have left Yahoo breathless, and ready for a break.
We don't think it's reasonable to assume we're going to gain a lot of share from Google," Chief Financial Officer Susan Decker said in an interview. "It's not our goal to be No. 1 in Internet search. We would be very happy to maintain our market share.
Google is, without a doubt, the world's search engine, owning a bigger market share than Microsoft and Yahoo combined. According to Nielsen NetRatings, however, Google owns only about half of all search-related traffic, and roughly 20 percent of the market is serviced by smaller providers such as Ask Jeeves, AOL, and a host of other companies. Yahoo is planning to focus on other areas of its business rather than attempt to capture more of this market. Yahoo throws in the search towel Linked by shanmuga Tuesday, 24th January 2006 8:49PM
