11% of Americans received a notice that their private data had been compromised


The Ponemon Institute found out that about 11% of Americans indicated they've received notice from a firm revealing their personal information has been lost in the last 12 months. About 40% of them almost missed the notice, believing the letter was either junk mail or a telemarketing call. 20% of those surveyed said they had "discontinued" their relationship with the company involved.
