New Security Nightmare: Robot Networks
From a network security professional's perspective, few things in computerland are harder to track than the elusive trail of data packets spawned by a hacker's botnet. Still, a team of researchers at BBN Technologies is trying to develop new strategies to trace packet trails back to their source to find and eliminate these networks of zombie machines.
The term "botnet" is computer jargon for a collection of computers infected with rogue code that allows a hacker to control the entire set of zombie machines, in tandem, to complete various tasks, such as carrying out distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against Web sites.
