Dangerous new methods such as "distributed reflection denial of service" attacks are straining and in some cases crippling existing defences, said experts at the conference for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which manages top-level domains such as .com and .org.
There's been a spate of attacks in the past few months against Domain Name System servers, which convert web addresses into the Internet Protocol numbers needed to pull up the requested website.
