RealPlayers Really Annoying Legacy
Side note on this week's news of a settlement and partnership between Microsoft and RealNetworks: Much of the response I heard from, er, real people (both in person and in response to my blog posting) related to Real's history as one of the most notoriously annoying companies in PC history.
For instance, time was when RealPlayer was extraordinarily grabby when it came to changing media settings without getting your clear OK--a policy which, I'm convinced, did a lot to define deviancy down in the tech world, setting the stage for adware and other programs which cheerfully reconfigure our PCs to serve their own purposes.
