Piracy, User Complaints Vex Symantec
Symantec Corp. last week said software piracy rings are costing it more than $10 million in lost revenue annually and are partly to blame for a slowdown in the processing of licenses for an upgrade of one of the company’s key Veritas data backup products.
Symantec CIO David Thompson told Computerworld that the security and storage management vendor has been investigating large piracy rings in the U.S. and Canada for more than two years. After Symantec bought Veritas Software Corp. in July 2005, he said, it discovered that the same groups were also pirating Backup Exec, a Veritas tool designed for small and midsize users.
