Free Windows Hardening Software

The Secunia Online Software Inspector – OSI, is a fast way to scan your PC for the most common programs and vulnerabilities, thus checking if your PC has a minimum security baseline against known patched vulnerabilities.

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer MBSA – Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) is an easy-to-use tool designed to determine the security state in accordance with Microsoft security recommendations and offers specific remediation guidance. Improve your security management process by using MBSA to detect common security misconfigurations and missing security updates on your computer systems.

xpy – xpy is a small software, securing your Windows 2000/XP/2003 installation and protecting your privacy. In addition to so-called Antispy features, it disables common security threats (RPC/DCOM, LMHash) and increases your Windows performance.

xp-AntiSpy – The xp-AntiSpy is a little utility that lets you disable some built-in update and authentication ‘features’ in WindowsXP. For example, there’s a service running in the background which is called ‘Automatic Updates’. I don’t know what this service transfers from my machine to other machines on the internet, especially the MS ones. So I play it safe and disable such functions. If you like, you can even disable these functions manually, by going through the System and checking or unchecking some checkboxes. This will take you approximately half an hour. But why wast time when a little neat utility can do the same in 1 minute? This utility was successfully tested by lots of users, and was found to disable all the known ‘Suspicious’ Functions in WindowsXP. It’s customiseable, but comes up with the Default settings, which are recommended.

Seconfig XP – A free tool to close (not just shield) most exploited Windows security holes. Can close ports 135, 137-139, 445, 1025 (used by file and printer sharing, Windows domains, other Microsoft Networks access and widely exploited by worms, hackers etc.), 1900, 5000 (used by UPnP) and other…Can disable most dangerous Windows services. Can protect Windows side against most ARP spoofing/poisoning attacks. Can configure many other hidden security related Windows TCP/IP settings. Works only with registry (no files, services, drivers etc.). Includes three easy to use presets for average home (standalone) computers, Microsoft Networks members and standalone computers with VPN client access to Microsoft Networks.

Secure-It – Secure-It is a local Windows security hardening tool developed by Thierry Zoller, it proactively secures your PC by either disabling the intrusion and propagation vectors proactively or reduce the attack surface by disabling underlying functionality malware uses to execure itself. It secures Windows desktop PCs against new dangers by blocking the root cause of the vulnerabilities exploited by malware, worms and spy ware . In some cases Secure-it is even able to protect your PC against threats prior to a patch release of the vendor.

Security & Privacy Complete – Security & Privacy Complete is mainly a security tool for Windows. It can disable all services which might be a securit-risk, harden registry settings… Also included privacy features for Internet Explorer, Media Player, and of course: Mozilla Firefox.

PC Security Test – a free program for Windows that checks computer security against viruses, spyware and hackers. With a few mouse clicks, users can easily control the efficiency of their protection software (anti-virus programs, spyware scanners and firewalls). PC Security Test simulates virus, spyware and hacking attacks and monitors the responses of your protection software. Don’t worry, no real viruses are involved ! After the tests are complete, PC Securtiy computes a security index and provides tips on improving PC security.

Windows Worms Doors Cleaner – will detect the enabled services by checking registry entries, the running services and the local open ports. To disable something, it only modifies existing registry entries, it doesn’t install anything nor modify any files.

BugOff – BugOff is a small application that will disable three exploits commonly used by browser hijackers (including CWS – CWShredder), thus protecting you from infection.

Reduced Permissions – Run Internet Explorer in a secure sandbox. It seems that there is a new vulnerability found in Internet Explorer every day. This stems from the fact that it was designed to allow ActiveX controls to install just about anything on your PC.

SecurAble – probes the system’s processor to determine the presence, absence and operational status of three modern processor features: 64-bit instruction extensions, Hardware support for detecting and preventing the execution of code in program data areas, … and Hardware support for system resource “virtualization.”
